Trade the Building Blocks of the World

Commodities are physical goods β€” gold, oil, wheat, copper β€” whose prices are driven by global supply and demand. Commodity futures let you trade these real-world assets through a regulated exchange without physically holding them.

  • 🌍
    Global Price Discovery
Commodity prices are driven by global events β€” geopolitics, weather, currency movements, and supply chains. Trading commodities gives you exposure to these macro forces directly.
  • βš–οΈ
    Portfolio Diversification
Commodities like gold often move inversely to equities β€” making them a powerful tool to balance a portfolio during periods of market stress or inflation.
  • πŸ›‘οΈ
    Hedge Against Inflation
Gold and silver have historically acted as stores of value during inflationary periods. Commodity exposure in your portfolio can help protect purchasing power over time.
  • ⚑
    Leveraged Futures Contracts
MCX futures contracts allow you to take large positions with a fraction of the contract value as margin β€” amplifying both opportunity and risk. Nikunj's RM explains margin requirements before you trade.

Common Questions Answered

Everything you need to know before starting commodity trading with Nikunj.

MCX (Multi Commodity Exchange) is India's largest commodity derivatives exchange β€” dedicated exclusively to commodities like gold, silver, crude oil, and base metals. NSE and BSE are stock exchanges that list equities, equity derivatives, and bonds. Commodity trading in India happens primarily on MCX (metals and energy) and NCDEX (agricultural products). Nikunj provides access to all three categories through a single integrated account.

No. Nikunj offers a unified trading account that provides access to equity, F&O, currency, and commodity markets β€” including MCX and NCDEX. You do not need a separate Demat or trading account. Once your account is active, commodity trading access can be enabled with your RM's assistance.

Margin requirements on MCX are set by the exchange and vary based on contract size, volatility, and the specific commodity. For gold futures, contracts are available in different sizes β€” the standard gold contract (1 kg), Gold Mini (100g), and Gold Petal (1g) β€” each requiring different margin amounts. Your Nikunj RM will provide the exact margin applicable before you place your first trade. Margins are subject to change based on exchange circulars.

On MCX, trading hours depend on the commodity type. Agri commodities trade from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. International commodities β€” such as gold, silver, and crude oil β€” trade from 9:00 AM to 11:25 PM (extended to 11:55 PM on days when US markets observe daylight saving). NCDEX, which handles most agricultural commodities, trades from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The extended evening session for international commodities tracks global price moves during US market hours.

Most retail traders square off their positions before expiry and do not take physical delivery. However, some MCX contracts β€” particularly gold β€” do offer physical delivery options if held to expiry. For most traders using Nikunj, positions are closed before contract expiry. Your RM will remind you about upcoming expiry dates well in advance so you can manage your position accordingly.

Gains from commodity futures trading are treated as business income under Indian tax law and taxed at your applicable income tax slab rate. Commodity trading is not eligible for capital gains treatment. Losses can be carried forward for up to 8 years. CTT (Commodity Transaction Tax) is applicable on non-agricultural commodity derivatives. We recommend consulting a qualified tax advisor for your specific situation β€” the above is general information only.

Gold prices on MCX are influenced by several global and domestic factors: the US Dollar Index (gold typically moves inversely to USD strength), US Federal Reserve interest rate decisions, global geopolitical tensions which increase safe-haven demand, central bank gold purchases, international gold spot prices (COMEX), and the INR/USD exchange rate which affects the rupee price of gold independently of global moves. Research reports shared with Nikunj clients track all these triggers daily.
